The Early Days

After Deb Griffey retired from dairy farming in 2005, her sister attended The Royal Winter Fair, where she became fascinated with alpacas for their gentle nature and soft, durable fleece...

Shortly afterward, she brought a few alpacas to Deb’s farm, and the sisters quickly recognized the unique qualities of alpaca fibre—soft, hypoallergenic, warmer, and more durable than wool.

From Challenge to Opportunity

The sisters soon faced a challenge: Ontario had very few fibre-processing facilities, and the wait times for turning raw fibre into yarn stretched to nearly a year.

That’s when the idea of creating their own fibre mill began to take shape.

The Family Project

With her farming and machinery expertise, Deb researched fibre processing, and a year later, she had built a small mill on her farm.

They launched "Shears to You," focusing on turning raw alpaca fibre into high-quality yarn.

In its early days, Shears to You provided custom fibre processing for other alpaca producers. However, Deb realized that to truly thrive, they needed their own line of products. That’s when her cousin Tom, who worked in a hosiery plant, joined the venture.

Experimenting With Yarn

Deb and Tom started to experiment with yarn weights and blends until they crafted the ideal alpaca sock yarn.

Just as they were ready to move forward, Tom’s company closed, leading Deb to make another bold decision: she purchased seven sock-knitting machines and hired the company’s skilled mechanic.

With this setup, Alpaca Time launched its first signature products: the Star Trekker hiking socks and Pro’s Choice golf socks.

Becoming Alpaca Time

In 2008, Deb rebranded as Shears to You Fibre Pro’s, and in 2012, her daughter Tara joined to drive its growth.

In 2014, they aimed to open a retail store.

By 2016, Deb sold the farm, secured a prime Highway 9 location, and rebranded as Alpaca Time, embracing the motto “Any time is Alpaca Time.

In 2022, Tara took over the store.
